The Department of Pharmacology of the SBUMS School of Medicine began its mission in 1963 by offering courses with only one academic staff to the students of medicine and dentistry. Following the changes in the department chair in 1988, the department expanded its educational and research activities benefitting from three assistant professors and four lecturers, and began working toward preliminary steps admitting PhD students. In 1991, the department was relocated at the fourth floor of the SBMU School of Health, and since then, it has been admitting 4 PhD students every two years. In 2005, the department was relocated again and this time at the fifth floor of the newly-made building of the School of Medicine. The research labs are equipped with the latest and most modern machinery for research projects and student's proposals and dissertations. The results of such studies have been the publication of many scientific articles in national and international journals. The academic staff of the department are active in offering courses to the students of medicine, dentistry (at general & graduate levels), PhD students of nutrition, PhD students of pharmacology, PhD students of Physiotherapy, PhD students of parasitology, PhD students of Nano-Medicine, Master's student of physiology, undergraduate students of nursing, op, emergency medicine, anesthesiology and nutrition. 

  • In 2006, following the approval of the Reform Program in Medicine, the department began educating students in 17 SBUMS affiliated educational hospitals.
  • In 2010, the department began offering courses to the SBMU students studying at the International Branch of the University in Qeshm Island.
  • Following the approval by the Ministry of Health, Treatment, and Medical Education, the number of admitted students increased to 8 students annually.

 Lab Facilities:

The facilities available at the Department of Pharmacology of the SBUM School of Medicine are as follows:

  1. The chromatography lab tools which include Shimadzu HPLC systems with UV and fluorescence detectors, ultrasonic, vacuum pumps and thermo-mixer.
  2. The behavioral lab machinery with full capacity including formalin test,  Analgesia meter, vonfrey filament setup, hot plates for rats, tail flick test, animal scales, CO2 capsule for anesthetizing animals, Nitrogen tanks for keeping animal tissues, temperature recording tools, micro-dialysis pump, physiography instruments, and pure oxygen capsules, Morris water maze, mouse running wheels, electromodule,  open field and RF electrosurgical unit.
  3. The general biochemistry lab instruments: which include a sensitive digital scale, a distilled water and de-ionized water instrument, a hotplate, a pH–meter tool, a rotating evaporator tool, a drying water instrument, a bain-marie tool, a spectrophotometer, an incubator shaker,  a computerized ELISA reader tool, chemical hood, a refrigerator & freezer, a -80 degrees freezer, a centrifuge equipped with refrigerator, western blotting systems, PCR, homogenizer, stimulator, syringe pump, Gel documentation  and a micro-centrifuge tool.
  4. The cell culture lab tools which include an autoclave for sterilizing plastic tools, a centrifuge, a refrigerator, and freezer, a CO2 incubator, a Class II Laminar Hood, and a light, invert microscope.   
  5. The Immunohistochemistry lab including tissue processor, dispenser plus, cold plate, hot plate, microtome and tissue float.

The Department Research Lines 

The research lines of the Department of Pharmacology at the SBUM School of Medicine include the following:

1.    Animal study

  •  Pain behavior: acute pain and chronic pain
  • Acute pain:  peripheral and central pain and Chronic pain: neuropathic pain, visceral pain, addiction and pain (experimental and clinical), immune system and pain, hormonal system and pain, inflammation and pain
  •  Herbal medicine study: pain, Alzheimer, Parkinson, cancer, metabolism and hormone
  •  Neurodegenerative disease: Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson
  • Epilepsy: kindling model and chemical model
  • Cerebral ischemia: focal (middle cerebral artery occlusion)and global (two and four vessel occlusion)
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Therapeutic pharmacology drug monitoring or study
  • Diabetes study
  •  Molecular and cellular study: protein expression and gene expression
  • Learning and memory study
  •  Extracellular recording of field potential, from anesthetized rats for recording of LTP and epileptiform activity.
